What do you do with leftover/stale bread? French toast or bread and butter pudding.

So what do you do with leftover/stale croissants? A croissant and butter pudding

Caramel Croissant Pudding

This was a take on Nigella Lawson’s…i was in a toasted cheese croissant phase for a while and then had plenty of leftover croissants that needed to be used up. I can’t remember exactly how much of what went into it but this is a good guess :-

2 large or 4 medium sized stale crossaints, torn into rustic large pieces
1/2 cup sugar
2tbsp water
knob of butter
1/2 cup cream (double cream works best)
1/2 cup milk
2 eggs, beaten
splash of bourbon (optional)
Grated cinnamon/nutmet/orange zest (optional)

In a saucepan, slowly melt sugar and water. Do NOT stir it but keep an eye on it because it burns really easily. Let it brown and turn into gooey caramel (deep rich amber colour). This will take around 3-5 minutes.

Remove from heat and very quickly whisk in cream, milk and butter. Add a splash of bourbon at this stage if you prefer. As it cools down a little, add your eggs. Make sure you don’t add them when its still hot or they’ll turn into scrambled eggs (: Add grated orange zest or preferred spices.

Steep the mixture with your crossaints for 10 minutes and bake in preheated oven at 280C for 20 minutes or till golden brown and puffy.

Serve hot with some ice cream or a dollop of cream.

The first time i made this i halved the sugar and found it not sweet enough. I then melted some dark chocolate and poured it over the pudding and it was…heavenly to say the least. So you could do this if you wish to or go according to the recipe.

Comfort food indeed! I wish this was supper everynight…

Honey Joys

80gm butter
1/3 cup sugar
1 tbsp honey
4 cup cornflakes
handful of silvered almonds (optional)

Preheat oven to 150C. Melt the butter, sugar and honey in a saucepan till it boils and becomes frothy. Remove, stir in cornflakes and almonds and spoon to little paper patty cases.

Bake for 10-12 minutes and cool. Stores well in airtight containers for 2-3 days (if you can resist finishing them).

I think i cried watching every single series this week. All the series finale…even Hell’s Kitchen. But oh my Grey’s and Prison Break was a killer for me.

Ever since Good Friday, there’s been this weird noise coming from the backyard…

It sounded like a kitten purring or something, so my housemates and i went out to investigate. The sound apparently came from a bush. So we took a torchlight, with 7 people starring at a bush..we didn’t find anything. We even opened a can of tuna trying to lure it out.

I think it was hours later when we realised that there was NOTHING there. Then it was when one of my housemates realised that the sound was coming from underground. So we thought it was the pipes.

But hrm…

It’s not. We experimented with the taps and pipes…its not the pipes. Besides pipes don’t purr.

The sound only happens when the sun goes down…and its really loud. When we go out the sound dies down. WTF WTF WTF.

Best of all that bush is right outside Jason’s window (:

Btw, did i tell you that right next door is a burnt down house?

I have a confession to make.

I think i must have watched The Sound of Music about a hundred times now. IF my family were to have our own movie, it would be Sound of Music. Every holiday, or even weekends, when i was little…we would sit down and watch this – over and over again. And we didn’t watch this on DVD, not even VCD or cassette tapes..we watched it on the huge record discs, you know those which looked like the gramaphone discs? So cool. We still have it at home and i must remember to watch it again one of these days.

I would remember the lines and lyrics to everything, my sister and i would act out the parts in the film (cuckoo – cuckoo!) and we never got sick of it. Its a classic i suppose.

So last week when my boss brought in the film and some hot cross buns for the little ones to watch during lessons it really hit the spot. Bring back memories!

Anyway, i downloaded it and i watching it…over and over again.

A foodie’s movie. All about ramens and the art of eating ramen. But like my sister mentioned, its the kind of movie to watch when you’re high.

For those who’ve asked about my blog – the lack of updates, lack of quality posts…i have an answer for you. My blog revolves around my life and right now my life is nothing but work and uneventful social life.

To be honest I’m losing track of time here. This week was supposed to be a uni break but yesterday when i finally sat down in sigh of relief that i didn’t have work the next day it hit me that it was already Friday and the week is ending.

I miss the old life. Back home when i would just wait on someone else to get me places. To school, to parties, to dinners. Now i’ve learned to plan ahead, and sometimes wait an hour for the bus and walk back in the rain on a barely lit street.

You know what else i miss? I miss sleeping next to a furball. That same furball who rolls over begging for attention, who bites your hair and covers you with slime. But thats OK, because now i know thats what dogs are for. To be with you on the crappiest days of life.

Anyhoo, its nearly 6 in the morning and i’ve got to get to work in 2 hours. I’m mentally exhausted but tomorrow is a new day and with it comes a new challenge. Patience is something i don’t always have but over the past few months i’ve learned that patience IS a virtue. I’ve learned to accept mistakes – to accept flaws and imperfections and be optimistic and to say the most positive things even when im on the verge of exploding. That nobody is perfect and everybody is different and special in their own ways. I’ve learned how to speak kids language and then the next second communicate with someone nearly 4 times my age. I’ve learned how to be fun in the most boring and dull situations.

Most of all I’ve learned that when a child in playschool drew her music teacher in a field of flowers, butterflies and err, fishes, i must have done something right.
